Sarah is a freelance instructor and Mountain Leader. She is an accredited DofE assessor, a canoe coach and is working towards the Mountain Instructor Award.

Sarah started working as an outdoor instructor 6 years ago after discovering that it suited her passion for adventure much better than a “normal” job ever had. She loves climbing, skiing and exploring the world.

We asked Sarah a few questions about expeditions and this is what she said:

What is the most memorable expedition that you have been on?

All expeditions are memorable – especially the ones that don’t quite go to plan! I suppose one that leaps to mind was a trip to Ladak in India last year. The whole area unexpectedly flooded while we were in the final stages of a 13 day trek in the Markha Valley. Rivers that should have been ankle deep were up to our waists and I lost count of how many hours I spent in the freezing water getting the group safely across them all. It was exhausting work but also exhilarating!

If you were doing your Gold Expedition this year where would you go?

The Lake District. The mountains are fantastic and the scenery is second to none. You have to enjoy being out in the rain though – all those lakes didn’t appear from nowhere!

What is the one luxury item that you always take with you on an expedition?

A hair brush. No matter how wet, dirty, cold or exhausted you are – tangle free hair makes you feel like a whole new woman.
